Driving a pedicab is fun! From the casual family driver to the serious business entrepreneur, it's always rewarding to have smiling, happy passengers.

It is important for all drivers to spend some time training before adding passengers. Driving a large tricycle is not quite the same as a bike! For one thing, the back end is 50 inches wide, so it is important to practice maneuvering around objects. (Plastic orange cones are good objects to start with.) For another thing, you must steer the tricycle using the front wheel rather than shifting your body weight. It is good to practice going down hills to master this aspect before adding passengers. Another thing that drivers learn very quickly is to put the Pedicab in a low gear when they come to a stop.  If the Pedicab is left in a high gear, it may be difficult to accelerate.  But most drivers feel comfortable and safe within 15 minutes of practice. Most pedicab fleet managers have training programs for new drivers that last at least several hours.

Many people have found driving a pedicab to be a perfect part-time job. They often are people who enjoy bicycling, being outdoors, and meeting new people.

For most businesses, driving a pedicab is not a salaried job. Most pedicab drivers either own the pedicab themselves, or lease the pedicab from the owner. The driver keeps what he or she earns, which will vary from day to day.  Drivers tend to earn the most when there are many pedestrians and parking is in short supply.  Drivers often function as “rolling concierges” to give advice about the local restaurants and bars. It is not uncommon for passengers to tip generously when they have been entertained.
